PETA gets Nabisco to change iconic Animal Crackers Box

Nabisco parent company Mondelez International has changed the design of its iconic Barnum’s Animals crackers box after getting pressure from the animal rights groups People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The rectangular box now shows a zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe and gorilla on a grassland, instead of the more than 100-year-old design that showed them in cages, implying they were traveling in boxcars for the circus.

PETA wrote to Mondelez in 2016 asking for a redesign, charging that circuses are cruel to animals, and that the package should be updated to, quote, “show animals who are free to roam in their natural habitats.” Mondelez said in a statement, “When PETA reached out about Barnum’s, we saw this as another great opportunity to continue to keep this brand modern and contemporary.” Nabisco has been making Barnum’s Animals crackers since 1902. It has redesigned the boxes before, but only for limited-time special editions.
