Amazon says drones will be making deliveries ‘within months’

Drone deliveries are coming soon, according to Amazon, which said yesterday (January 5th) that it plans to have drones making deliveries to people’s homes “within months.” Amazon didn’t say, however, where the drones would be operating and exactly when they’d go into operation. Jeff Wilke, who oversees Amazon’s retail business, said the company’s new drones use computer vision and machine learning to detect and avoid people or objects in backyards when landing.

They are fully electric, can fly up to 15 miles and deliver in 30 minutes, and can carry packages of up to five pounds. Wilke said the company is working with several regulatory agencies to get approval, stating, “We expect to do it within months.”
