A Guns N’ Roses “superfan” has been threatened with a lawsuit by the band’s record label over an alleged leak of nearly 100 previously unreleased songs.
Universal Music Group (UMG) has accused Rick Dunsford of leaking 97 tracks over the Internet after obtaining the recordings from a storage unit auction.
It was last year when Dunsford came across a storage locker belonging to former Geffen Records A&R rep Tom Zutaut, who signed Guns N’ Roses in 1986. Zutaut had apparently stopped paying for the locker, which was being auctioned off.
Inside the locker were around 20 CDs containing unreleased Guns N’ Roses music spanning 1999 to 2001. Dunsford and some other fans came up together with the $15,000 that the person who had purchased the locker was asking for.
Dunsford has said he was not responsible for the song leaks, claiming that the person who bought the locker continued to sell copies of the songs after he had let the locker and the CDs go.
The label sent a cease-and-desist letter to Dunsford claiming he violated an earlier settlement agreement in which UMG paid him $15,000 to return the recordings.
