Groundhog Day is this Sunday and the animal rights organization PETA would like to see a big change to the holiday. In a letter to Punxsutawney Groundhog Club President Bill Deeley, PETA President, Ingrid Newkirk, declared, “Times change… It’s long overdue for [Punxsutawney] Phil to be retired.”
The letter went on to suggest, “Using technologically advanced electromechanical devices such as animatronics instead of live animals is more popular than ever.” The organization would like the town of Punxsutawney to use an electronic groundhog instead of a live one in their yearly ceremony.

PETA might have seen this clip from the movie Groundhog Day and gotten nervous for Phil’s safety…
