Tribeca, IMAX, AT&T launching summer series for DRIVE-IN theaters

Drive-ins are having a bit of a moment amid the coronavirus pandemic, as they’re seen as an option for safe entertainment as theaters are closed. Tribeca Enterprises, IMAX and AT&T said Wednesday, May 5th, that they’re teaming up on a summer programming series of new and classic films, music and sporting events called “Tribeca Drive-In.”

The series will take place in drive-in theaters and what were called “other exclusive venues” nationwide starting June 25th, with the lineup to be announced in the coming weeks. Hollywood has been putting out few, if any, new movies because most theaters are shut down, so even though many drive-ins remain open, they are short on content.

Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro said they were excited to give people, quote, “something to look forward to this summer and reinvent a classic moviegoing experience for communities to enjoy together safely.” There are about 335 remaining drive-ins in the U.S., according to the website DriveInMovie.com, down from some 4000 in their heyday in the 1950s and ’60s.
