The University of Notre Dame said Tuesday, August 18th, that it was suspending in-person classes for two weeks because of an outbreak of 147 coronavirus cases, the announcement coming just over one week after students returned to the school’s Indiana campus for the fall semester.
All of the cases but one are students, and the university said the infections were linked to, quote, “off-campus gatherings where neither masks were worn nor physical distancing observed.” The school said that if they can’t reduce the spread of the virus, they will have to send students home.
The news came one day after the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said it was also canceling in-person classes and switching to remote learning because it had a coronavirus outbreak one week after the new semester began. Also yesterday, Michigan State University said it was reversing plans to have students come back to campus for the semester beginning September 2nd, saying it would do most learning online.
