Breakdancing is now an Olympic sport, with the International Olympic Committee on Monday (December 7th) announcing that it will debut in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where it will be known as “Breaking.” The U.S. has been overwhelmingly dominant in international breakdancing international competitions.
The IOC also confirmed that skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will be sports for the Paris Games, after they were admitted for the 2020 Olympics on a preliminary basis. Even though they’ve yet to be seen because the 2020 Tokyo Games have been postponed to next summer due to the coronavirus pandemic, the IOC approved them for Paris. Adding all four of these sports is part of the effort by the Olympics organization to attract younger viewers as ratings for the Olympic Games have significantly dropped in recent years.
