It turns out, there is one stretch of space, out of all of the CTA El lines, that is louder than any other.
It’s part of the Blue Lune actually. From the Chicago to Grand stops, the train exceeds an audio volume of 88 decibels. To give you an idea of how loud that is, it’s close to a lawnmower that averages around 90 dB.
To be clear, that’s how loud it gets IN the car for the passengers. But, according to the president of the transit workers union ATU Local 308, it’s not loud enough to cause hearing loss.
Of course, if you’re riding the Blue Line with your headphones on, you probably never even noticed the sudden increase in sound from your train car.
