Bad news for speeders…
After attempts by Chicago city alderman to raise the speed limit at which cameras ticket drivers $35, City Council has shut them down. With a vote, The Chicago City Council has decided to continue ticketing drivers traveling between 6 and 9 mph over the limit.
The speed tickets have been a money-maker for the city and it is argued they have made city roads safer for pedestrians. It’s also been noted that the cameras have disproportionately target Black and Latino citizens due to their select placements throughout the city.
But Mayor Lori Lightfoot stands by her statement, “Chicagoans who choose to speed should be penalized.”
