Honor Flight Chicago took off from Midway International Airport Wednesday morning to take its 10,000th veteran to Washington D.C.
An Honor Flight is conducted by non-profit organizations dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to see the memorials of the respective war they fought in Washington, DC, at no cost to the veterans. The organization has been conducting the flights since 2005.
The 113 veterans were originally supposed to take the trip on April 5 but bad weather kept them grounded.
But on Wednesday, veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam headed to the Nation’s Capital to visit the war memorials and be celebrated for their service.
They returned to Chicago Wednesday evening to a welcome home celebration.
