Pretty soon those hard case I-PASS transponders will be a thing of the past .
The Illinois Tollway is switching to sticker tags, which are now being sold online and at Jewel Osco locations.
It’s part of an effort to shift away from the old technology that required a lithium ion battery. Unlike the hard case transponders, these new stickers never expire and don’t require a deposit.
Once a sticker tag is applied to a windshield, it will only stop working if it’s removed. That means it can’t be switched to another vehicle, as many drivers did with transponders.
Visitors to the upcoming Chicago Auto Show can also get the tags at the Illinois Tollway’s booth.
Drivers can continue to use their I-PASS transponders until their expiration date.
There is no deposit fee for I-PASS Sticker Tags. For customers with current transponders, the $10 transponder deposit will be transferred into their pre-paid toll accounts once a new I-PASS Sticker Tag is registered to the account.
The stickers will work in 19 states that are a part of the EZ-Pass system.
