News dropped yesterday that Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss are reprising their roles as Neo (Formerly Thomas Anderson) and Trinity in an upcoming Matrix sequel. This would be the 4th movie in the franchise, following The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Lana Wachowski is set to return to the franchise to write and direct, but Lilly Wachowski is not on the bill. I’m a bit of a Wachowski fan, and this is the first time I can remember a project featuring just one of the siblings.
Reading comments online, I was a little shocked to see so many people dislike The Matrix sequels. The first Matrix movie was groundbreaking, but I always enjoyed The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions for what they were, big popcorn entertainment. The action in all three films is top notch. There’s enough Sci-Fi philosophy for return viewings. While Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity steal the show, there’s A TON of interesting side characters! I love The Oracle and her sidekick / protector Seraph. The Architect, while I had no idea what the guy was talking about until I spent a few hours looking up Matrix facts and lore, is a wild and fun idea. I thought The Merovingian his wife Persephone (She was HOT) brought up interesting ideas about cause and effect. The Keymaker, The Train Man, the love triangle between Morpheus, Commander Lock, and Niobe (played by Jada Pinkett Smith)…. This really only scratches the surface of all the different characters throughout the three films.
On top of a great cast of characters, the action is awesome! Kung Fu fights. Gun fights. Space ships in sewers. (think Sewer Shark from the Sega CD) Space ships fighting sentinels in the charred skies above the burned out cities of Earth.
You could go beyond the movies! The Ani-Matrix is a really neat companion piece to the Matrix trilogy. The Renaissance Parts 1 and 2 on The Ani-Matrix is a killer animated story about the machines rise to power, and those two shorts are worth the price of admission alone. There’s also other shorts on the disc that add to the original Matrix trilogy.
Lastly, you could pick up your favorite controller and play the games! I beat Enter The Matrix on both the PS2 and the Nintendo Gamecube, and I beat it twice on each system! Once as Ghost and once as Niobe to get all the cut scenes. After that game, Path of Neo was released on the same consoles, and I beat the crap out of that too! There was a Matrix Onine MMORPG that I got try a few times, but it ended up being unsuccessful and was taken off the market pretty quickly.
Anyways – as someone who has been a pretty die hard fan of the Matrix franchise, I was disheartened to read so many comments about how the series wasn’t very good. Am I the only person who enjoyed all that the Matrix had to offer? Let me know! – Producer Dan
